How important is learning real music when learning guitar?
Question by brad: How important is learning real music when learning guitar?
I used to play piano and I can read sheet music, but it’s far easier when playing guitar to just go off of tabs to learn songs. If all I want to do is learn to play songs on guitar, how important is learning to play sheet music on a guitar? My teacher at school says sheet music is better in the long run.

Well, standard notation actually relates MUSICAL information… tablature doesn’t.
Regardless of whether or not tablature is easier, standard notation is far superior. It’s also a really handy skill to have. If I’m trying to teach a band a song, and they’re having trouble with a part, I’m elated if I can just hand them some sheet music and they can play it. I really don’t have the time to babystep them through a part. I’ll just find a better musician.
