What is an Acoustic Guitar?

Let’s check Wikipedia… First the definition of Guitar:
• The guitar is a musical instrument with ancient roots that is used in a wide variety of musical styles. It typically has six strings, but four, seven, eight, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen and eighteen string guitars also exist.
• Guitars are recognized as one of the primary instruments in jazz, blues, country, flamenco, mariachi, rock music, and many forms of pop. They can also be a solo classical instrument. Guitars may be played acoustically, where the tone is produced by vibration of the strings and modulated by the hollow body, or they may rely on an amplifier that can electronically manipulate tone. Such electric guitars were introduced in the 1940s and continue to have a profound influence on popular culture.
• Traditionally guitars have usually been constructed of combinations of various woods and strung with animal gut, or more recently, with either nylon or steel strings. Guitars are made and repaired by luthiers. There are many brands of guitars, but some commonly known brands are PRS, Gibson, Dean, Gretsch, Ibanez, Kramer, Jackson, Schecter and Fender.
Now Wikipedia definition of Acoustic Guitars:
• An acoustic guitar is a guitar that uses only acoustic methods to project the sound produced by its strings. The term is a retronym, coined after the advent of electric guitars, which depend on electronic amplification to make their sound audible.
• In all types of guitars the sound is produced by the vibration of the strings. However, because the strings can only displace a small amount of air, the volume of the sound needs to be increased in order to be heard. In an acoustic guitar, this is accomplished by using a soundboard and a resonant cavity, the sound box. The body of the guitar is hollow. The vibrating strings drive the soundboard through the bridge, making it vibrate. The soundboard has a larger surface area and thus displaces a larger volume of air, producing a much louder sound than the strings alone.
So we now have a basic understanding of what a Guitar and an Acoustic Guitar is. Let’s get an idea of why they are so popular. In my opinion Elvis popularized the Guitar. He made the sound part of American youth popular culture. This spread around the world. This has evolved to present day. An example is the popularity of Guitar Hero the fun and thrilling video game, that you can now play with the whole family. There is a passionate connection to the music through the timing and rhythm of the music as it flows through your hands, arms and total body. It is a very personal yet shared experience that is very exciting. Remember Tom Cruise in the 1980’s Risky Business where he slides into frame in his underwear and Jams to That Old Time Rock And Roll. Like I said it is both a personal experience that is passionately shared by those who groove to the music.
So we have learned the basics of what a guitar is and a little bit about the thrill and popularity of the Guitar and how music and making music is and part of Us all of… even if all that some of can play is the “AIR” Guitar!
